Further details
HERMAN SAFTLEVEN, VIEW OF ARNHEM WITH THE CHURCH OF SAINT EUSEBIUS, BRUSH, BROWN WASH, BLACK AND WHITE CHALK ON BLUE PAPER
Though Herman Saftleven is famous for his many drawings of Utrecht, he also took an interest in other Dutch cities, as shown here in this view of Arnhem, easily recognizable by the bell tower of St Eusebius church, the upper part of which features four small turrets. The Arnhem archives (Gelders Archief, inv. GD 182) hold another panoramic view of the town, very similar and of the same dimensions. Produced before 1644, it shows a wooden bridge that was rebuilt in stone at the same time. The present drawing was undoubtedly made around the same time, in the early 1640s. Here Saftleven demonstrates his great ability to depict the urban landscape attractively. The brown wash applied with a brush brings elegance and suppleness, while the blue paper gives the scene an almost nocturnal character.
