Further details
PIETER DE MOLIJN, LANDSCAPE WITH A WAGON BEING ATTACKED BY BRIGANDS, BLACK CHALK, GREY WASH
Two other drawings depicting brigands attacking a wagon are known by this Dutch painter and draughtsman, who was active in Haarlem in the first half of the 17th Century: Paris, Fondation Custodia, inv. 3553 and Rotterdam, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, inv. PdM2 (H.-U. Beck, Pieter Molyn 1595-1661, Katalog der Handzeichnungen, Doornspijk 1998, p. 94, nos. 139-140). Like a topos, the artist's nervous treatment of the trees, the large space given to the sky punctuated with isolated birds and the lightly sketched cloud cover can be found in these drawings as well as in the present sheet.
