Post lot text HERMENEGILDO ANGLADA CAMARASA, MONTSERRAT, OIL ON CANVAS, UNLINED, SIGNEDThe Catalan painter Hermenegildo Anglada-Camarasa (1871-1959) begun his career at the Escola de Belles Arts in Barcelona, where he studied under Modest Urgell (1839-1919). In 1888, at the age of seventeen, he participates in the Exposición Universal and holds his first monographic exhibition six years later at the Sala Pares in Barcelona exhibiting naturalistic landscapes. After his education in Barcelona, he moves to Paris in 1894 where he attends the Académie Julian. During that time, he paints numerous scenes of Parisian nightlife, focusing on his colour palette and the effects of light. His technique was visibly influenced by artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) and Kees van Dongen (1877-1968). Conversely, his influence can be seen in the works of younger artists such as Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), whom he meets during his stay in Montmartre. In 1914, the artist settles in Pollença, in Majorca, where he dedicates the best part of his time painting in a raw, spontaneous style, using large strokes of paint to reduce the landscape to angular and rhythmic forms. During the Spanish civil war, Anglada-Camarasa stays in the region of Montserrat, which he represents here in a characteristically spontaneous and lively manner.
