Further details
HUBERT ROBERT (1733-1808), FIGURES IN AN ANTIQUE GALLERY, OIL ON CANVAS, UNLINED, ON ITS ORIGINAL STRETCHER
With its figures, many of them in pseudo-classical dress, in the large gallery with a barrel vault ceiling, this loosely executed painting follows a theme that was very dear to Hubert Robert (1733-1808), that of the prosaic life amongst eternal ruins. Other examples of this subject, large galleries with washerwomen, or people making offerings at altars, both Christian and Greco-Roman, as here, can be dated to the 1760s, when he was in Roman, (see for instance Washerwomen in Ruins, Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, inv. no. ГЭ-5806).
