Hugo Wolf (1860-1903)
Autograph manuscript signed ('Hugo Wolf', at upper right), ‘Keine gleicht von allen Schönen’ (HWW 161/4), [composed 18-24/25 December 1896]
The Stichvorlage, a fair copy of the music and text for voice and piano on four systems of three staves, two pages, 344 x 265mm, the layout for the printer indicated in autograph in blue pencil with the specification '3 Druckseiten', further annotations in pen and lead pencil; with Wolf’s transcription of the text on a separate bifolium along with two other Byron translations, ‘Sonne der Schlummerlosen’ (which Wolf went on to set a few days later, HWW 161/3) and ‘Ich sah dich weinen’, 3 pages, 174 x 110mm. Provenance: Sotheby's, 1 and 2 July 1935, lot 366 – bought by Maggs; Stargardt, 8 October 1994, lot 279.

One of Hugo Wolf's last songs. A setting of Byron’s ‘There be none of Beauty’s daughters’, a composition ‘wrapped up in rich and sumptuous material [which] contains moments of rare beauty’ (Songs, p.258). This is one of Wolf‘s last compositions (only seven later songs survive), written over Christmas 1896, as Wolf commented to Heinrich Potpeschnigg on 28 December: ‘My finest Christmas present is a new song. I hope you will like it too. Because of constant interruptions it took me a whole week to finish’ (quoted in Complete Songs, p.10). It was published as the third of the ‘Vier Gedichte nach Heine, Shakespeare und Lord Byron’ by Verlag Heckel, Mannheim, in 1897.
