Autograph manuscript signed ('Hugo Wolf'), ‘Nachtgruß’, Vienna, 2 November 1880
29 bars for voice and piano on four systems of three staves, 1¼ pages, 328 x 252mm, with the indication 'Ziemlich lebhaft', autograph annotation at head 'Schunt!' ('rubbish!'). Provenance: Alfred Cortot (1877-1962, pianist and collector: monogrammed stamp); Stargardt, 17 March 1995, lot 954.
An abandoned setting of a poem by Eichendorff: one of the few songs written by the composer in 1880, the setting comprises only the first two of eight stanzas of the poem. A second manuscript, also unfinished, is in the Wiener Stadt- und Landesbibliothek. It is apparently unpublished.
