JACOPO DI GIOVANNI DI FRANCESCO, CALLED IL JACONE, FIGURES IN AN INTERIOR, PEN AND BROWN INK

This drawing is executed in the distinctive graphic style of Jacone, a pupil of Andrea del Sarto, and well-known to Giorgio Vasari, who described him as lazy and extravagant, but also as an extremely skilled and creative draftsman (Le Vite de’ più eccellenti pittori, scultori ed architettori, Florence 1568, III, p. 544).
The artist’s drawings, which have only recently been studied by Marzia Faietti, are usually executed in pen and often represent obscure subjects (‘Jacone, disegnatore fiero e ‘fantastico’’, in Michelangelo e il disegno di architettura, exhib. cat., Vicenza, CISA, and Florence, Casa Buonarroti, 2006-2007, pp. 119-127). Nicholas Turner has tentatively identified the scene on this sheet as the Encounter of Joachim and Anne at the Golden Gate (op. cit., p. 32).
