PIRRO LIGORIO, A GROUP OF FIGURES: A WOMAN LEANING FORWARD, THREE MEN AND A CHILD, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH, HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE

This drawing, heavily influenced by the manner of Polidoro da Caravaggio, can be dated to 1540s as it compares with early drawings by Pirro Ligorio both in style and technique (Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, inv. NMH 1762/863; Staatsliche Museen, Berlin, inv. KdZ 17226; see J. A. Gere, ‘Some early drawings by Pirro Ligorio’, Master Drawings, IX, 3, 1971, pl. 10 & 11). During the 1540s, Ligorio was active in Rome as probably the most prominent specialist in façade decoration. Like the Stockholm and Berlin sheets, the technique of the present one, combined with the low-relief format of the composition, suggest it was intended for a façade in grisaille, a genre that seems to have occupied Ligorio during those years.
