£ 4 000 – 6 000
Traité des arbrisseaux et des arbustes cultivés en France et en pleine terre. Paris: chez l'auteur, 1825.
A tall copy with wide margins, beautifully bound in the romantic style. Although the colour-printed botanical plates of the small trees and bushes appeared first in the author's much larger work, Plantes de France, in the present edition, however, the plates were printed with much more care and were finished by hand. Nissen BBI 991; Dunthorne 211; Stafleu & Cowan 3309.
2 volumes, octavo (267 x 171mm). 176 colour-printed stipple engraved botanical plates numbered 1-88, 89-176 finished by hand, tissue guards (plates 97 and 98 with tiny stain at the top edge affecting one adjacent textleaf, occasional minor insignificant browning and spotting). Contemporary half red morocco, gilt spines (corners fractionally rubbed). Provenance: Jaime Ortiz-Patino (his sale Sotheby's New York, 21 April 1998, lot 138).
