JEAN-BAPTISTE VANMOUR, THE (ARMENIAN?) WEDDING, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED, OIL ON CANVAS

Similar to a composition in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (inv. no. SK-A-2001), the present painting appears to depict an Armenian wedding. The bride, draped in imposing yellow and white finery, is led to the church by family members who help her move. The dancing figures opening the procession are also seen in the Amsterdam painting, supporting the current iconographical reading.

The large format and the state of preservation of this painting, which is exceptional for a work that has travelled widely, is a moving testimony to one of the main religious communities living in 18th century Constantinople.
