Further details
JEAN BARBAULT (1718-1762), THE VENETIAN, OIL ON CANVAS
We do not know whether Jean Barbault (1718-1762) spent time in Venice, as the topographical accuracy of the various versions of The Venetian does not provide definitive proof. The present painting includes a representation of the island of San Giorgio, and an earlier version on the Paris market featured the Doge's Palace and the columns of Saint Mark and Saint Theodore (see D. Jacquot, 2010, op. cit., p. 101, cat. 30), but others are limited to a misty background or generic boats. With her black shawl, it is possible that the coquettish model in this painting is a noble lady who has just become engaged, as these young aristocrats were supposed to hide their faces from everyone except their future husbands. However, she could also be a courtesan who is pretending to be an innocent young girl.
