Further details
JOHAN RICHTER (1665-1745), VENICE: VIEW OF SAN GIORGIO MAGGIORE FROM THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT; VIEW OF THE BASILICA DEL REDENTORE FROM THE ZATTERE, OIL ON CANVAS, A PAIR
The View of San Giorgio Maggiore from the Church of the Holy Spirit and the View of the Basilica del Redentore from the Zattere bear witness to the extreme sensitivity to the variations in light that Richter (1665-1745) managed to capture in his works. Born in Stockholm, a city of silver hues and cold grey tones, Richter left for Italy around 1710, finding himself in 1717 under a golden sun, which sparkled in the turquoise waters of Venice and played over the cream marble a pink brick facades her palaces. These colours came to define the palette of his work.
Views from the Church of the Holy Spirit, belonging to the parish of the Gesuati further along the Zattere, are quite rare. There are two other versions by Richter, one sold at Christie's (7 July 2006, lot 234, £96,000), and one listed in the Zeri archive. In the latter, there is a stream of light that comes from between the two buildings, showing that they are separated by a small calle (alleyway). Francesco Guardi (1712-1793) also chose to depict this same view three times towards the end of his career. These works are currently in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam and the Galleria Nazionale di Palazzo Barberini in Rome.
These two paintings will be included in the book on views of Venice currently being prepared by Prof. Dario Succi.
