Further details
JEAN-FRANÇOIS MILLET, THE TEMPTATION OF CHRIST IN THE DESERT, BLUE CHALK
Works that are purely religious in their iconography are very rare in the oeuvre of Jean-François Millet, even though the Christian faith was important to him. The choice of blue chalk also sets this drawing apart as the medium is virtually unheard of in Millet's work. In 1862, Alfred Sensier (1815-1877) tried to persuade Millet to paint ‘scenes from the Bible’ at the request of Frédéric Hartmann (1822-1880), Théodore Rousseau's (1812-1867) main patron, and advised him: ‘in addition to the Gospels, think of other subjects to your taste’ (Jean-François Millet, exhib. cat., Paris, Grand Palais, 1975-1976, p. 181). Though this publishing project did not come to fruition, it is possible that this blue chalk sketch, which shows great freedom and skillful rapidity of execution, fits into this context. Some important religious drawings in black chalk made around 1863 include the Flight into Egypt (Chicago, The Art Institute, inv. 1996.608), and the Resurrection of Christ (The Art Museum, Princeton University, inv. x1943-240).
