Further details

JEAN-LOUIS ANDRÉ THÉODORE GERICAULT, VIOLIN PLAYING BEGGAR WITH A DOG AND A CHILD, GRAPHITE

This violin playing beggar can be compared with The Piper, a lithograph after Théodore Gericault depicting a piper in profile, published in February 1821 by the London based Rodwell and Martin in a collection entitled Various Subjects drawn from life and on Stone by Gericault, (see L. Delteil, Le Peintre-graveur illustré. Gericault, XVIII, Paris, 1924, no. 30). The present drawing cannot be considered as directly preparatory for the lithograph, however, as there are several differences between the two. In the latter, the fiddle becomes bagpipes, the dog on a lead is behind the musician rather than in front, and the child on the man's back disappears. The idea of both musicians may have been inspired by two etchings by Bartolomeo Pinelli (1781-1835) of bagpipers in Rome at Christmas time (Géricault. Dessins & Estampes des collections de l'Ecole des beaux-arts, cat. exp. Paris, Ensba, Cambridge, Fitzwilliam Museum, 1997-1998, under no. E. 24). This lithograph series bears witness to Gericault's interest in subjects ‘drawn from life’. He wrote to his friend Dedreux-Dorcy in 1816: ‘If there is anything certain for us on earth, it is our sorrows. Suffering is real, pleasures are only imaginary' (ibid).
We are grateful to Philippe Grunchec for confirming the attribution after visual examination.
