JEAN-ROBERT ANGO, CHRIST HEALING THE PARALYTIC AT BETHESDA, AFTER GIOVANNI PAOLO PANINI, BLACK CHALK, OVAL
Copies after the masters in black chalk are recurrent in the graphic work of Ango, a friend of Hubert Robert and Fragonard in Rome. Two other compositions executed in the same technique and based on paintings by Giovanni Paolo Panini (1691-1765) are in the Musée du Mont-de-Piété in Bergues (L.-A. Prat, Le Dessin français au XVIIIe siècle, Paris, 2017, p. 499) and in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Orléans, both made for the Abbé de Saint-Non (inv. 1591.F.; see S. Boyer, ‘Quelques proposition autour de Jean-Robert Ango’, Bulletin de la Société de l’histoire de l’art français, 2008, no. 6, p. 92, ill.). In the present drawing, as in that in Orléans, Ango includes the initials of the artist he is copying, ‘GPP’ followed by the year of execution. The painting by Panini copied by Ango today adorns the royal palace of the Granja de San Ildefonso, near Segovia, Spain, and already belonged to King Philip V at the time (F. Arisi, Gian Paolo Panini e i fasti della Roma del'700, Rome, 1986, no. 243, ill.).
