Ornamental engravings
Each signed in the plate and with the place name Aug. V. (=Augsburg). Etchings on handmade paper. 33 sheets mounted on the upper edge behind a passe-partout (passe-partout 46.5 x 33.5 cm). Some restored, stained, trimmed, browned.

Nilson gehört zu den seinerzeit bekanntesten Augsburger Künstlern des Rokokos und nimmt auch innerhalb der Augsburger Künstlerszene eine exponierte Stellung ein. Er stammt aus einer schwedischen protestantischen Künstlerfamilie, die schon zur Geburt seit zwei Generationen in Augsburg ansässig ist. Von seinem Vater Andreas (1690-1751) erbte er nach dessen Tod die Berechtigung, als Maler in Augsburg zu arbeiten. In der Zeit hat er sich auf den Ornamentstich mit schwerpunktmäßig allegorischen und genremäßigen Inhalten spezialisiert, ursprünglich wohl noch im Auftrag Hertels, und spätestens 1765 hat er seinen eigenen Verlag gegründet. Neben seiner Verlagstätigkeit war er Direktor der protestantischen Reichsstädtischen Kunstakademie sowie Mitglied der katholischen "kayserlich Franciscischen Akademie der freien Künste und Wissenschaften" der Stadt Augsburg. All diese Auszeichnungen betonen die soziale Stellung des Künstlers in seiner Zunft.

Wieso ausgerechnet Nilson bis heute auch bei den Stechern eine hervorgehobene Stellung besitzt, liegt nicht nur an eben dieser hervorgehobenen Stellung der Zeit, sondern auch an der Rezeption der Ornamentstiche des Künstlers. Bis heute sind die Blätter Nielsons nicht nur in Ornamentstichsammlungen des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts zu finden, sondern auch noch in den Besitztümern großer Firmen. Seine Vorlagen waren vor allem in der Fayence- und Porzellanmalerei beliebt, in jeder größeren Porzellanmanufaktur der Zeit lassen sich seine Stiche nachweisen. Allein im Besitz der Firma KPM sollen weit mehr als 1000 Drucke Nilsons bis heute existieren (Gun-Dagmar Helke, Johann Esaias Nilson (1721-1788) - Augsburger Miniaturmaler, Kupferstecher, Verleger und Kunstakademiedirektor, München 2005, S. 186). Weiter wurden sie für Raumschmuck wie Tapeten und Ofengestaltungen verwendet. Hier finden sich die Anwendungsbeispiele weit über die Grenzen des Augsburger Raumes wieder, so zum Beispiel im Schloss Eggenberg in Graz, in der Bellarie in Ceske Krumlov, im Rittergut Ermlitz zwischen Leipzig und Halle oder auf Züricher Öfen in der Schweiz (eine Übersicht über die Verbreitung der Nilsonschen Motive vgl. Gun-Dagmar Helke, s.O. S.247-252).

The information about the auction winners is confidential. The auction winner will receive a direct notification from the auction house responsible with instructions for further action: an invoice for payment and the manner in which the goods will be received.
