JOHNSON, Lionel (1867-1902)
Poems. London: Elkin Mathews and Boston: Copeland & Day, 1895.
First edition of Johnson’s first book, an unusually fine copy of the second issue, one of 750 copies; there was a first issue of 25 copies. Johnson was a member of the Rhymers Club, founded in 1890 by W. B. Yeats and Ernest Rhys, a group of London poets who met and read poetry in Fleet Street. The group published two collections of poems in 1892 and 1894, with Johnson contributing to both. Other influential members included Oscar Wilde and the poet, critic and magazine editor Arthur Symons. Johnson’s work was spiritual and deeply emotional. He was a fervent and largely orthodox Roman Catholic; his homosexuality formed the backdrop to much of his writing and was never far from the surface. This work contains the first printing of his most celebrated poem ‘The Dark Angel’.

Octavo (212 x 147mm). Half-title, title with a large woodcut of William of Wykeham printed in red, designed by Herbert Horne, printer’s device on verso of last in red, typographical ornaments on first leaf in red (very minor dust soiling to some deckle edges). Contemporary boards, title printed on spine (spine slightly darkened); blue morocco-backed folding case by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Provenance: Barry Humphries (1934-2023; bookplate).
