KARL MARX: Capital - : A Critical Analysis Of Capitalist Production with handwritten dedication of Friedrich Engels (1820-1895) and Edvard Aveling (1849-1896)
London, 1887, 2 vol., english, first edition
23 x 15 x 3 cm und 23 x 15 x 3,3 cm
First English edition, published four years after Marx's death. Edited by Friedrich Engels, translated by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling, based on the expanded version in French, which was still monitored and expanded by Marx himself and which has appeared in deliveries since 1872. The first volume of the Capital was published in German in 1867 - in Hamburg - the only part published in German during Marx's lifetime. Parts II and III were posthumously edited by Engels on the basis of Marx's manuscript. The planned 4th part could only be published by Kautsky on the basis of the notes left by Marx.
The present copy of the rare English first translation is gaining additional interest because of the dedication on the end paper. On the end paper there is the entry 'William Morris from .... Edward Aveling. March 1887 '. This is joined by Engels' autograph signature (inserted into Aveling's dedication). The coincidence of these three names can be regarded as very unusual. Engels was the editor of Marx's writings, his literary legacy. Aveling was one of Marx's translators (he had married Marx's youngest daughter, Eleanor). Morris is the founder of the Arts and Craft Movement, one of the most influential innovators in the arts and crafts - textile art, furniture art, book printing, etc.
