A SMALL PITCHWAI OF THE ANNAKUTA FESTIVAL - India, Rajasthan, Nathdwara, ca. 19th c. - Pigment on cotton. The painting depicts the autumnal Hindu "Annakuta Festival" (Govardhan Puja), during which large quantities of food, especially rice, are set up in front of "Shrinathji (Krishna as a seven-year-old child) as a donation. The donation is made to "Shrinathji" in gratitude for His protection when he raised Mount Govardhan to protect the people of Vrindavan from heavy showers. The food mountain represents Mount Govardhan in this context. "Shrinatji" is worshipped by priests and devotees. In the foreground a herd of cows, referring to the youthful Krishna as a cowherd. Around the sides, depictions of various manifestations of "Shrinathji". - From an important private collection in northern Germany, collected mainly in India from the early 1950s to the 1980s - Red textile backing. Pigment auf Baumwolle. Das Gemälde stellt das herbstliche, hinduistische "Annakuta Festival" (Govardhan Puja) dar, bei dem große Mengen von Lebensmitteln, vor allem Reis, vor "Shrinathji (Krishna als siebenjähriges Kind) als Spende aufgebaut werden. Die Spende gilt "Shrinathji" in Dankbarkeit für Seinen Schutz, als er den Berg Govardhan erhob, um die die Bewohner von Vrindavan vor starken Regenschauern zu beschützen. Der Essensberg repräsentiert dabei den Berg Govardhan. "Shrinatji" wird von Priestern und Gläubigen angebetet. Im Vordergrund eine Kuhherde, die auf den jugendlichen Krishna als Kuhherden-Hirten verweist. Seitlich umlaufend Darstellungen von verschiedenen Erscheinungsformen von "Shrinathji".
