A TERRACOTTA GROUP DEPICTING THE VICORY OF TIME OVER LOVE, ATTRIBUTED TO LAURENT GUIARD (1723-1788)
Initially apprenticed to a blacksmith in Cerey, Laurent Guiard returned to Chaumont, his native town, to study drawing with the painter Bénigne Lallier and the ornament sculptor Hansman. Following the advice of Jean-Baptiste Bouchardon, he then went to Paris, where he entered Edme Bouchardon’s workshop. In 1749 he won a first prize for sculpture, and in 1751 was admitted to the École royale des élèves protégés. After receiving his diploma as a student at the Académie de France in Rome in 1754, he moved to Rome, where he produced various copies after the antique. On his return to Paris, he was confronted with the jealousy of his own master, who closed the doors of the Académie to him. His career compromised in his own country, Guiard accepted offers from the Duke of Parma, who called him to his court.
The treatment of this group can be compared with Aeneas and Anchises in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. RF 3699), and the project for a funerary monument attributed to Guiard in the same collection (inv. RF 2980).
