MICHEL-FRANÇOIS DANDRÉ-BARDON, ALLEGORY OF GLORY, AND WARRIORS RESTING, BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, STUMPING, HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE
Rector of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture and founding member of the Académie de Marseille, Dandré-Bardon was not only an art theorist, but also a prolific draughtsman working in a range of techniques. Originally from Aix-en-Provence, throughout his career he maintained close links with his native region, for which he supplied numerous paintings, as he did for churches in Paris. Attributed to Carle van Loo by the nineteenth-century art historian the Marquis de Chennevières, who mentions it in L'Artiste (March 1897, p. 178), this drawing was given back to Dandré-Bardon by Pierre Rosenberg in 1974 (op. cit.). Here, two independent compositions are drawn on the same sheet. The group of warriors at rest in the lower section is reminiscent of repoussoir figures regularly found in Dandré-Bardon’s work, and could be a study for another part of the same composition as the allegorical figure in the upper part of the sheet.
