The first edition of Leon de Laborde’s beautifully illustrated descriptions of the Levant, its landscapes, its architecture and its people. Laborde was a French archaeologist, politician and draughtsman who travelled throughout southern Europe, Egypt and the Middle East. Laborde gave up on his position as a secretary of the French embassy in Rome in 1845 while remaining in charge of the antiquities at the Louvre, dedicating himself to publishing accounts of his travels and a study on the history of engraving. Large folio (590 x 420mm). 74 leaves, lithographic title with vignette of ruins of Palmyra, 2 historiated woodcut initials within borders by Fragonard but without the introductory text, 157 tinted lithographs on 74 plates, by Letronne and Freeman after Laborde, Champmartin, Deroy and others, a few plates printed with touches of colour (some occasional spotting, mostly light, but a couple of leaves heavily affected). Modern brown half morocco (extremities lightly rubbed).
