‘In the plain at the foot of Canosa, we found a Gothic church called the Chiesa Madre. This church, built almost entirely of fragments and Marble loaded with ancient inscriptions, is decorated with choice and taste, as are all the buildings erected in those barbaric times from the remains of monuments that once existed in the vicinity.’ (Voyage pittoresque, III, pp. 34-35).
