LOUIS TOCQUÉ, BUST-LENGTH PORTRAIT OF MARQUIS CHARLES DAVID GODEFROY DE SENNEVILLE, OIL ON CANVAS
This portrait of Charles David Godefroy (born 1721), Marquis de Senneville, Lord of Daubeuf and Vertot, is typical of the work of the portrait painter Louis Tocqué (1696-1772). Dressed in a blue jacket and a golden waistcoat decorated with floral embroidery, the first gentleman of the King's chamber typifies the carefree aristocracy under the reign of Louis XV (1710-1774). The son of Pierre Charles Godefroy (1698-1733), lord of Senneville, councillor of the Parliament of Normandy, Charles David was born in 1721 in Rouen and remained a bachelor until the age of 49, when he married Marie Adélaïde Paviot.
Tocqué's portrait shows the young man well before his marriage, in the prime of life. It is interesting to note that the embroidered jacket worn by the sitter clearly belonged not to the marquis but to the artist, since it also appears in the Portrait of Jean-Baptiste-Joachim Colbert, Marquis de Croissy, painted in 1749 (now in the Snite Museum of Art, Notre Dame, Indiana) and the Portrait of a Gentleman in the collection of the National Gallery in London (inv. no. NG4097).
