Further details
Located in the natural park of the Hämeenlinna region, the Hotel Aulanko was designed by architects Märta Blomstedt and Matti Lampén and today represents a fine example of Finnish modernism. Emphasis was placed on the use of local materials, and furniture pieces were sourced from various Finnish manufacturers, including Artek, Taito, Merivaara, Keravan Puuseppätehdas and Stockmann.
The “Aulanko” armchair is the only piece of furniture designed by Marta Blomstedt for this project. According to plans and drawings, twenty pieces were made with a tubular steel base, all of which were installed in the hotel's lounge/smoking room when it opened in 1938.
Although the manufacture of these first models had been entrusted to Arvo Laine in Hämeenlinna, Artek bought back the rights to the model in 1939. The outbreak of World War II most likely altered Artek's plans. The armchair retains the same volume and characteristics, but the drawings show a modification of the base with a wooden frame. The last drawing is dated August 16, 1941, and production did not resume after the war. Very few pieces were produced, probably only prototypes that were not marketed. Two examples, including the one presented in our sale, are known to date.
