Further details
THE LYON MASTER (ACTIVE BETWEEN 1740 AND 1750), THE GRAND CANAL, VENICE, LOOKING SOUTH-WEST FROM THE RIALTO BRIDGE TO THE PALAZZO FOSCARI, OIL ON CANVAS
Once attributed to Bernardo Bellotto (1722-1780), this atmospheric view of the Grand Canal has now been given to the Master of Lyon (active c. 1740-1750), an artist whose real name we do not yet know, but who is thought to have worked alongside the young Bellotto in the studio of Canaletto (1697-1768). Charles Beddington, whom we would like to thank for confirming the attribution of lots 42 and 43 to the artist on the basis of a photographic examination of the work, has identified a group of works by the master whose sobriquet is taken from a painting in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, Le Grand Canal, regardant vers le nord du Palazzo Rezzonico au Palazzo Balbi, also previously attributed to Bellotto (see C. Beddington, ‘Bernardo Bellotto and His Circle in Italy. Part II: The Lyon Master and Pietro Bellotti', The Burlington Magazine, 2005, CXLVII).
Beddington describes the Master's work as showing a deep understanding of Bellotto's early style, particularly in its sharp contrasts between light and shadow, and in its use of black. The Lyon master also adopted the technique of the young Bellotto in his skies, where he used diagonal strokes of paint, from bottom left to top right. Through its very particular tonality and expressive rendering, the present view eloquently demonstrates the elements that distinguish the Master of Lyon from the other hands in Canaletto's workshop. Lots 42 and 43 repeat the compositions of two works by Canaletto currently in the Royal Collection in London (inv. nos. RCIN 406890 and RCIN 401404), part of a series of twelve views of Venice painted around 1730.
