Further details

MARIE-JOSEPH-ALPHONSE PELLION, A MURDER SCENE AT THE BAZAAR, KUPANG, TIMOR ISLAND, GRAPHITE, PEN AND BROWN INK, DATED 1819

The scene depicted relates a news item seen by members of the expedition: a murder committed in the streets of Kupang on 21 October 1818. Jacques Arago, who was also part of the voyage, sketches the same incident: ‘Yesterday, a boy [...] ran away from his master: a slave, trying to stop him, was stabbed in the throat. The latter, having withdrawn the knife and struck the fugitive with it, fell dead [...] The assassin was taken to the governor’s secretary, who told us that he was to send him to Java, where the slave would be hanged’ (Récit, Paris, 1882; quoted in the sale catalogue Christie’s, Londres, 26 September 2002, p. 47). The present drawing by Pellion is probably the artist’s first record of the event, drawn on the spot with a precise but rapid pen stroke. The watercolour drawing used for the engraving, from the Freycinet collection, was sold at Christie’s, London, 26 September 2002, lot 47.
