MARIE-JOSEPH-ALPHONSE PELLION, TWO DRAWINGS OF BRAZIL 1817-1818, GRAPHITE, WATERCOLOUR, WATERMARK

In September 1817, Louis de Freycinet and a crew of scientists, engineers and draughtsmen set sail from the port of Toulon and travelled the world in their ship. They crossed Brazil, the Cape, Mauritius, Reunion Island, the West coast of Australia, Timor, the Caroline Islands, Marianne, the Sandwich Islands, Port Jackson (Sydney) and the area around Cape Horn. Shipwrecked off the Falkland Islands, they were rescued and sailed up the east coast of South America before returning to Cherbourg in October 1820.
The scientific team was accompanied by the draughtsmen Jacques Arago (1790-1855), Alphonse Pellion and the young Adrien Taunay le Jeune (1803-1828), who were responsible for ‘faithfully representing all the specimens that their weight or fragility did not allow them to take with them. They were to take accurate views of the various coasts [...] pleasant landscapes; it was only natural to hope that M. de Freycinet and his collaborators would add some new features to the history of savage peoples’ (Rapport fait à l’Académie royale des Sciences, dans sa séance du 23 avril 1821, sur le voyage de circumnavigation de la corvette du Roi l'Uranie, commandée par M. L. de Freycinet, p. 317). It is this last part task in particular that is the subject of the selection of drawings presented here, some of which are directly preparatory to engravings for De Freycinet’s book, the editorial culmination of this expedition and published between 1824 and 1844: Voyage autour du monde fait par ordre du Roi sur les corvettes de S. M. l’Uranie et la Physicienne, pendant les années 1817, 1818, 1819 et 1820.
This previously unpublished set of drawings, brought back from one of the most important scientific expeditions of the 19th century, is one of the few still in private hands.
