MATÍAS DE IRALA, FRONTISPICE WITH THE SPANISH KING, FERDINAND VI, BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK
Born in Madrid, Matías de Irala took up drawing by copying engravings when, at the age of twenty-four, he joined the Franciscan Friars Minor of Saint Francis of Paula at the La Victoria monastery on the outskirts of Madrid (now no longer in existence) as a lay brother. Once released from his monastic obligations, he devoted himself to teaching drawing, producing both drawings and engravings. However, very few of his paintings are known today. He illustrated several medical treatises, including Anatomía completa del hombre by Martín Martínez in 1728 and Theatro Chyrurgico Anatómico del cuerpo del hombre viviente by Francisco Suárez in 1729.It was as a continuation of this work that he produced the present drawing, in preparation for the engraved fronstispiece of a work on the history of Mexico written by the ethnographer Lorenzo Boturini Beneduci (1702-1753) in 1746 and entitled Idea de une nueva historia general de la America septentrional.
In this drawing, Matías de Irala depicts, in the upper left medaillion, King Ferdinand VI of Spain, known as the Wise Man of Bourbon (1713-1759), supported by two Corinthian columns with his motto ‘Plus Ultra’ inscribed below the medallion. He wears the Golden Fleece and his armorial bearings are supported in the upper right by two winged putti. The drawing is highly accomplished, teeming with detail, and the different planes make it possible to depict several scenes very clearly, with armour and weapons in the foreground as a repulsive figure, and three caravels in the background, awaited by the natives. With its highly decorative, sometimes exuberant style and compositions full of ornamental detail, Irala is perfectly in keeping with the Spanish Baroque of the first half of the 18th century.
We are grateful to Dr. Ismael Gutiérrez-Pastor for his help in cataloguing this drawing.
