Post lot text
Painted circa 1936-37, this composition by Maurice Utrillo depicting the crossroads between boulevard Charles de Gaulle and rue Clémenceau in Sannois is a historic and particularly symbolic rediscovery.
Acquired by the Sannois town museum in 2004, this work was recently restored to Georges Bernheim’s legal heirs, in 2022.
An art dealer at 109, rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, Georges Bernheim (1871-1946) championed and collected the masters of Impressionism such as Cézanne, Renoir and Degas.
At the start of the war, faced with the menace of anti-Semitism, Georges, his wife and his children fled Paris for their second home in Grasse. On their return to Paris after the war, they found that their town house at 3 rue Dosne had been looted and that Georges’s files and inventories had been stolen. Georges then submitted requests for restitution – based solely on his own memory – to the Artistic Recovery Commission (Commission de récupération artistique, or CRA) – an organisation responsible immediately after the war for searching for looted artworks, objets d’art and books.
This painting was confiscated on 11 December 1940 by the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg – a German organisation in charge of the confiscation of artworks. It was later put into storage at the Louvre Museum before being transferred to Jeu de Paume on 20 October 1942.
The painting was later transferred to Allen Loebl, in the name of Hermann Göring on 23 November 1942, in exchange for the art library of the Kleinberger Galleries in Paris.
It was the Commission d’indemnisation des victimes de spoliation (Commission for the Compensation of Victims of Looting) which, in 2015, informed Sannois Museum of the provenance of Carrefour à Sannois, and initiated the process of restoring the work to Georges Bernheim’s legal heirs.
