Oil on canvas, re-lined. Depiction of Saint Margaret of Antioch, surrounded by clouds. The chained dragon at her feet on the right, being warded off with her crucifix. A putto above her, holding the martyr's crown over her head. Restored in places. In a modern, partially silver-plated, wooden frame. Dimensions including frame 180 x 136.5 cm.
Michael Willmann (1630 in Königsberg - 1706 in Leubus, Silesia) was one of the most important German baroque painters of his time. After spending two years studying in the Netherlands around 1650, he returned to Königsberg and qualified as a master craftsman. Over the following years, he created the famous frescoes in the Cistercian monastery in Leubus and was appointed electoral court painter in Berlin in 1657. He settled permanently in Leubus in 1660, where he continued to work on the monastery church.

Öl auf Leinwand, doubliert. Darstellung der himmlischen Margareta von Antiochia, umgeben von Wolken. Rechts zu ihren Füßen der angekettete Drache, von ihr mit dem Kruzifix zurückgewiesen. Über ihr ein Putto, den Märtyrerkranz über ihr Haupt haltend. Stellenweise restauriert. In modernem, teilversilbertem Holzrahmen. Maße mit Rahmen 180 x 136,5 cm.
Michael Willmann (1630 in Königsberg - 1706 in Leubus in Schlesien) zählt zu den bedeutendsten deutschen Barockmalern seiner Zeit. Nach zweijährigem Studienaufenthalt in den Niederlanden um 1650 kehrte er nach Königsberg zurück und legte dort seine Meisterprüfung ab. In den folgenden Jahren schuf er die bekannten Fresken im Zisterzienserkloster in Leubus und wurde 1657 zum Kurfürstlichen Hofmaler in Berlin. 1660 ließ er sich endgültig in Leubus nieder und arbeitete dort weiter an der Klosterkirche.
