Volume en maroquin rouge de l'époque, aux armes de Madame de Montespan.
Peu après sa mort, entre le 22 et le 28 juillet 1707, est dressé un inventaire manuscrit du mobilier, des objets et des ouvrages se trouvant dans son château d’Oiron. 79 livres, principalement des ouvrages de théologie et d’Histoire, y sont listés par leurs titres et leur auteur. Au feuillet 10 recto de cet inventaire manuscrit [Archives départementales des Deux-Sèvres, cote J 2451], on peut lire : Dans la chambre de feue ma dite dame…une petite bibliothèque de laquelle ouverture faite s’est trouvé…Les Conférences de Cassien en deux tomes ». Le premier volume a été, au fil du temps, séparé du second. Cette provenance est particulièrement rare. L'exemplaire passe ensuite dans la collection de son fils, le duc d'Antin, qui l'intègre à sa bibliothèque dans le château de Petit-Bourg.

Reliure de l'époque en maroquin rouge, aux armes et chiffre de Madame de Montespan (OHR, pl. 720, fer n°4 ; Guigard, I, pp. 184-185), dos à nerfs et caissons ornés, gardes de papier marbré, tranches dorées. Provenance : exemplaire aux armes de et mentionné dans l'inventaire après décès de la bibliothèque de Madame de Montespan (1640-1707) -- son fils, Louis-Antoine de Pardaillan de Gondrin, duc d'Antin (1665-1736 ; sur le titre, mention manuscrite "de la bibliothèque de Petitbourg B.B. n°12") -- sur le premier feuillet blanc, mention manuscrite du XVIIIe siècle "Monsieur Ruffin" -- sur le contreplat, ex-libris gravé "H. Le Fuel".
An attractive volume bound in red morocco with the gilt arms of Madame de Montespan, the most celebrated maîtresse-en-titre of King Louis XIV. This copy was part of her personal library in her castle of Oiron, and is listed in the manuscript list. Second volume only.
