Further details
NICOLAS DE LARGILLIERRE, STUDY OF THREE HANDS, ONE HOLDING A LETTER, BLACK, RED AND WHITE CHALK
Although Nicolas de Largillierre made very few compositional studies for his paintings, several hand studies drawn using the trois-crayons technique are known, one of which is in a private collection (London, Stephen Ongpin Gallery). This is a preparatory sheet for the famous Family Portrait, formerly known, incorrectly, as Portrait of the Artist's Family, now in the Musée du Louvre (fig. 1; inv. MI 1085). The two hand studies in the upper part correspond to those of the young woman holding a sheet of music and singing, while the study in the lower part seems to be an initial thought for the hand of the mother holding her coat and finally resting on her lap. With this delicate and skilful use of the trois-crayons technique, Largillierre ‘sought pictorial effects not unlike contemporary drawings by La Fosse, Antoine Coypel or Watteau’ (op. cit., 2003-2004, p. 134).
