In 1836 Otto Grashof completed his years of study in the master class of Wilhelm von Schadow in Berlin. The topic of his final thesis was the realisation of a literary theme in the form of Count zu Stolberg's poem "Lied eines alten schwäbischen Ritters an seinen Sohn aus dem zwölften Jahrhundert" from 1774. The painting was subsequently acquired by the Kunstverein and raffled off to its members as an annual prize.
For Otto Grashof, this painting is the conclusion of his training and the beginning of his career as a painter. Thus, for him, who will later work in Russia and South America, the work is just as much a departure as it is for the knight portrayed, who has just been handed the sword by his father while the trumpeter is already sounding the departure bell.
