L’un des plus précieux exemplaires qui soient, celui de l’imprimeur Léon Pichon, enrichi d’un dessin original signé de Picasso, de deux suites ainsi que de trois épreuves supplémentaires, dans une élégante reliure de Creuzevault.
En 1928, un jeune bibliophile de vingt-quatre ans à peine, Albert Skira, fonde sa maison d'édition à Lausanne. Sans expérience préalable, il se fixe pourtant un objectif audacieux : parvenir à faire illustrer par Pablo Picasso le premier livre qu'il publierait en tant qu'éditeur. Après nombre de discussions, l'artiste accepte et se charge d'illustrer les Métamorphoses d'Ovide. "C'est un des rares cas où Picasso illustre un livre avec autant de fidélité au texte ; il choisit des scènes bien déterminées et se plaît à chercher la représentation idéale, faisant jusqu'à six versions d'un même sujet".

In-4 (325 x 252 mm). Un des XX exemplaires hors commerce, réservés aux collaborateurs, celui-ci le n°II, sur Japon, imprimé pour Léon Pichon. Illustré de 30 eaux-fortes originales en noir de Pablo Picasso. En outre, l’exemplaire est enrichi de :
- Suite avec remarques des 30 eaux-fortes, tirées sur Japon ;
- Suite barrée des 30 eaux-fortes, tirées sur Rives (la suite barrée a été tirée à 100 exemplaires sur Rives, celui-ci le n°44, numérotée et monogrammée par Albert Skira à la justification, et 10 exemplaires sur Chine) ;
- 3 épreuves avec remarques, la première tirée sur vergé, et les deux suivantes sur vélin de Rives. La dernière épreuve présente des remarques en bistre.
Le volume comprend donc au total 93 eaux-fortes originales de Picasso.
- L’exemplaire est, enfin, enrichi d’un grand dessin original signé de Pablo Picasso (“Femme Assise et Cheval”, même composition que la planche n°21 de l’ouvrage). Dessin original à la mine de plomb (325 x 245 mm), sur feuillet de papier Japon blanc, monté sur onglet entre les deux feuillets blancs qui succèdent à la couverture et qui précèdent la page de faux-titre. Signé en haut à gauche. Le Comité Picasso a confirmé l’authenticité de cette œuvre. Un certificat sera remis à l'acquéreur.
Reliure signée de Creuzevault : maroquin vert foncé, plats ornés d'une grande feuille stylisée, mosaïquée en box ébène, les nervures de la feuille peintes à l'oeser, dos lisse orné du titre et du nom de l'illustrateur au palladium, tranches au palladium sur témoins, gardes et doublures de daim noir, couverture et dos conservés, chemise et étui assortis.

Provenance : Léon Pichon (1876-1956, exemplaire nominatif) -- d'après le catalogue Gillet de 1999: Edmée Maus (1905-1971) puis Jean Hugues (1923-1997) -- Renaud Gillet (1913-2001 ; sa vente, Sotheby’s Londres, 27 octobre 1999, lot n°138).

One of the most precious copies ever offered at auction : one of the XX copies not for sale, reserved for collaborators (this copy no. II, on Japan paper, reserved for printer Léon Pichon), this copy enriched with a large pencil drawing signed by Picasso, two suites (one on Japan paper with remarques, and one of the 30 suites of cancelled etchings on Rives), three additional proofs, in a remarkable binding by Henri Creuzevault.
