Further Details
A LIMOGES RECTANGULAR PARCEL-GILT POLYCHROME ENAMEL PLAQUE OF THE BETRAYAL, PIERRE REYMOND OR HIS WORKSHOP, THIRD QUARTER 16th CENTURY
This plaque of The Betrayal of Christ, formerly attributed to the circle of Jean Court, is actually closer in design and technique to the work of Pierre Reymond and his workshop.
The choice of colours, notably the shades of blue and violet, and the quality of the treatment of the faces, drapery and hair, especially in the figures of Christ and Saint Peter (seen cutting off Malchus' ear), allow us to draw a parallel between the present plaque and the one of identical dimensions representing Christ Washing the Feet of the Apostles, which was previously in the collection of Edme-Antoine Durand (1768-1835) and is now in the Musée du Louvre (see fig. 1, inv. no. MR 2532 and N 1311). This suggests that the two may once have been part of a larger cycle representing The Passion of the Christ commissioned to decorate an altarpiece. An example of such an altarpiece is on display in the chapel of the Château d'Écouen (inv. no. OA 1313). The composition of The Betrayal, as well as that of the plaques in the Louvre and Écouen, is influenced by Albrecht Dürer's engravings of the Passion.
