A fascinating copy of this rare treatise on cosmetics, the first of its kind, in which the author chooses the romantic novel form in order to provide numerous beauty recipes. The work is the story of a forbidden love between Abdeker, a young doctor devoted to the care of the women of the Sultan's seraglio in Constantinople, and the magnificent Fatmé, a jewel of great beauty. It also contains a biography and some scholarly visions of Abdeker, a chapter on the invention of the toilet, a terrifying portrait of thinness, but also many recipes for perfumes, face ointments, oils, lotions and various cosmetics, beauty and healthcare products.

4 volumes, 12mo (140 x 80mm). Additional title to the first and fourth volumes and titles in each, all engraved by Jean-Jacques Pasquier, half-titles in the third and fourth volumes, the gatherings are mostly composed of 12 leaves, except for the final ones; the volumes are apparently complete but are sold not subject to return as the signature is different from that shown in SBN. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spines with red and dark labels, red edges (light wear). (4)
