Estimate value
£ 3 000 – 5 000
Self Seekers. A Novel of Manners. London: Leonard Smithers, 1897.
A fine copy of the very rare first edition of Raffalovich’s last publication. In February 1896, Raffalovich had been baptised into the Catholic faith and shortly after gave up his literary career in London. On publication Beardsley wrote to Raffalovich, 'So many thanks for Self-Seekers, welcome enough after so many delays in its coming out. How nice it looks' (Nelson p.406).
Octavo (189 x 127mm). Half-title, printer’s device on title page. Contemporary publisher's green cloth, title and author gilt on upper side and spine (extremities very fractionally rubbed, a small spot on lower side); green morocco-backed folding case by Trevor Lloyd. Provenance: Fermor Hesketh family (Easton Neston book-label on pastedown) — Barry Humphries (1934-2023; bookplate).
