Siebert copy of the first edition of the 23rd Relation, covering the 1653 treaty between the French and Iroquois. After many years of hostilities, the Haudenosaunee entered into a brief peace with the French in 1653, focusing instead on their own relations with the Susquehannock and the Erie. McCoy notes that according to Palitsis, this is one of the rarer Jesuit Relations; indeed, the last copy recorded at auction by RBH was this very one at the Freilich sale. Bell (49, 50, 51-all mixed issues with second issue of title-page); Church 541; Howes J-106 ("b"); McCoy 94 (var. 5).

Octavo (178 x 105mm). Table/privilege leaf bound at end instead of after title. Woodcut device on title (occasional toning). Contemporary stiff vellum, title in ink on spine, edges red. Provenance: Frank T. Siebert (acquired from Henry Stevens in 1952 and sold his sale, lot 51, to:) – Joseph A. Freilich (his sale, 10 January 2001, lot 288).
