Siebert copy of the first edition of the 34th Relation—with the rare map of Iroquois Territory. The map also depicts three French fortifications on the Iroquois River, which are described in Chapter IV. Bell 64; Church 596; Howes J-106 ("b"); McCoy 115 (variant without letter of La. R. Mere Superieure).
Octavo (170 x 108mm). Woodcut device on title. Large folding map (closed tear going a little into image, unobtrusive repairs to blank lower margin of first four lives). Contemporary vellum, title in ink on spine. Provenance: partial inscription of French monastic house, and later partial inscription of French library on pastedown – Frank T. Siebert (acquired from Henry Stevens in 1959 and sold his sale, Sotheby's New York, 21 May 1999, lot 58, to:) – Joseph A. Freilich (bookplate; his sale, Sotheby's New York, 10 January 2001, lot 295).
