Lot 98 | [RELIURE « AU VERNIS MARTIN »]
Estimate value
€ 600 – 800
Almanach des dames pour l’an 1816. Tubingue : J.G. Cotta et Paris : Treuttel et Würtz, s.d. [1816].

A very scarce and attractive example of an odorless varnished binding, also know as “vernis Martin”. These bindings are notoriously fragile : their finish was obtained by the application of dozens of layers of lacquer and by carefully rubbing the binding down between each coat. Also included are two French almanachs in contemporary bindings.
