Post lot text RICHARD BRAKENBURG, CELEBRATIONS AT THE INN, OIL ON CANVAS, SIGNEDPainter of the Dutch golden age, Brakenburg’s (1650-1702) oeuvre is dominated by genre painting inspired by popular mores whose tonalities, motifs and characters are reminiscent of the work of his master, Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685) as well as another artist from Haarlem, Jan Steen (1626-1679) (J. Aono, Confronting the Golden Age. Imitation and innovation in Dutch Genre Painting 1680-1750, Amsterdam, 2015, p. 34). His compositions are characterised by horizontal formats which stage several characters in a singular, large room and participating in popular activities such as celebrating Saint-Nicolas’ feast day, visiting the doctor, or as in this case, simply drinking in a tavern (J. Aono, op. cit., p. 157).
