Post lot text ATTRIBUTED TO MARTEN VAN CLEVE, EPIPHANY, OIL ON PANEL LAID DOWN ON CANVASMen, women, children, dogs and cats come together in this joyous composition representing a feast on the day of the Epiphany, a theme dear to the painters of the Flemish school in the 16th and 17th centuries. Celebrated on the 6th of January, this Christian celebration commemorating the Three Kings’ visit to the Christ Child brought together all strata of society, as they would gather to eat slices of cake in which a bean had been hidden. The lucky finder of the bean - then a small coin or token - was named king and consequently presided over the festivities. Each time the king raised his cup, the assembly imitated him whilst shouting: 'The king drinks! If one of the guests did not comply with this rule, his cheeks were blackened with soot by the king's fool. As is often the case in the work of Marten van Cleve (1520-1570), the painter's studio has rendered this happy cacophony by dividing this chaotic composition into several distinct scenes: on the left, a couple in disguise enters, in the centre, a family accompanied by musicians loudly greets the king, and on the right, women are busy preparing the cakes (G. Marlier, Pierre Brueghel le Jeune, Brussels, 1976, p. 355). Everyone is visibly merry, despite the wide-open doors, the perforated gable and the cracked plaster of the chimney, which expose the revellers to the winter temperatures of January. No one seems to pay any attention to the newcomers who come bearing news. Indeed, it doesn't matter if the news are good or bad: as long as there is food and drink, the king and his clique will continue to celebrate.
