Richard Wagner (1813-1883)
Autograph letter signed ('Richard Wagner') to [Franz von Pfistermeister], Starnberg, 15 May [1864]
In German. One page, 209 x 137mm, bifolium.

To the secretary of Ludwig II, who has just intervened to save him from financial ruin. 'I have just decided to take care of my business in Munich on Tuesday instead of tomorrow (Monday), and I am informing you of this most respectfully, in order to enable you to give His Majesty information about my humble self at any time'.

Franz von Pfistermeister (1820-1912) was court secretary to Ludwig II, who almost immediately after acceding to the throne at the age of 18 (10 March 1864) had charged him with seeking out Wagner, whom he found in early May at Stuttgart. Wagner was then at his lowest ebb, having been obliged to flee his creditors in Vienna after incurring heavy debts through his extravagance: Ludwig's intervention, via Pfistermeister, was a turning point in his life and career. Already by this date, he was settled at the king's expense in Haus Pellet, on Lake Starnberg near Munich, and the patronage of Ludwig was to yield the premieres of Tristan und Isolde in the following year and Die Meistersinger in 1868, and ultimately the establishment of the Bayreuth Festival.
