ROSALBA CARRIERA, AN ALLEGORICAL FIGURE, HER HEAD CROWNED WITH LAURELS, HOLDING A BOOK, PASTEL, ON BLUE PAPER, LAID DOWN ON CANVAS
Thanks to a recent discovery by Xavier Salomon, we now know that this allegorical portrait by the Venetian pastellist is related to at least two other works. Preserved at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (inv. 53.942, 53.943), they are of identical dimensions, have the same numbering on the back of the stretcher and are framed in the same way (B. Sani, Rosalba Carriera 1673-1757. Maestra del pastello nell’Europa ancien régime, Turin, 2007, nos. 184a, 184b, ill.; Jeffares, op. cit., nos. J.21.158, J.21.1583, ill.). Bernardina Sani dates them to around 1724 (op. cit., p. 185).
By comparing the dimensions, the compositions, and the subjects of the three works, an Allegorical figure of Poetry (?) probably completed this series, which exists today in three versions: one in the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karslruhe (inv. KH 674; see Sani, op. cit., no. 374, ill.; Jeffares, op. cit., no. 21.1646, ill.), the others in private collections (one recently in the sale Christie’s, Paris, 1 April 2011, lot 41; see Sani, op. cit., nos. 375, 377, ill.; Jeffares, op. cit., nos. J.21.1648, J.21.1651, ill.; and R. Enke and S. Koja, eds., Rosalba Carriera. Perfektion in Pastell, exhib. cat., Dresden, Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, 2023, no. 152, ill.). However, none of these versions seems to have belonged to the same series as the Boston pastels and the one offered here, which is very finely executed and in a fine state of preservation. A pen drawing of the same composition as the work offered here was in the sale Dorotheum, Vienna, 22 April 2021, lot 146 (as Rosalba).
We are grateful to Xavier Salomon for his assistance in writing this note.
