Further details
ROSALBA CARRIERA, PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG GIRL, PASTEL
By this Venetian portrait painter, a member of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, the pastel presented here brings together all the characteristics of Rosalba Carriera's work. The pearl in the girl's ear, the tilt of the head, the flowers in the hair and the fleshy treatment of the center of the lips, brightly coloured in red pastel, are all similarities that can be found in different works by the artist. Two rarer features are the relatively small size of the work and the circular biscuit, like a doughnut, which the little girl is holding up to her mouth and which is found in a Portrait of a Young Boy ‘con ciambella’ in the Gallerie dell'Academia in Venice (fig. 1 B. Sani, Rosalba Carriera, Milan, 1988, no. 188, ill.).
This pastel belonged to Mr and Mrs Taigny. Edmond, born in 1828, died in 1906. Two years later, his wife lent this delicate portrait to the famous Cent Pastels du XVIIIe siècle exhibition, organised by the Marquise de Ganay in aid of the Société française de Secours aux blessés militaires, which ran from 18 May to 10 June 1908 at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris.
Edmont Taigny was a senior civil servant, historian and great collector of French art. During the decade 1882-1892, he was vice-president of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. His collection also included works by Jean Béraud, Gustave Moreau and Pierre-Paul Prud'hon.
We are grateful to Neil Jeffares for his help with the note.
