Further details
SAM SZAFRAN, MALAKOFF, BOULEVARD MONTPARNASSE, GRAPHITE, WATERCOLOUR, SIGNED
French draughtsman and watercolourist Sam Szafran has developed a work that runs against the flow of the abstract painting that dominated the second twentieth century. His work is profoundly influenced by changes in classical perspective, and the idea of a point of view that is sometimes dilated in labyrinthine stairwells and sometimes submerged in vegetation. The artist confided to his friend Jean Clair that he wanted to ‘provoke attention, force the eye to see differently, make us wonder how the eye sees things’ (Jean Clair, Sam Szafran, cat. exp. Fondation Maeght, Saint-Paul de Vence, 2000, p.19).This watercolour is part of a series dedicated to the roofs of Paris. Presumably made from the window of the artist's studio in Malakoff, it uses the same viewpoint as an earlier drawing held by the Fondation Gianadda (J. Clair, D. Marchesseau (dir.), Sam Szafran, 50 ans de peinture, Martigny, 2013, p.159), the leading institution for Sam Szafran's work, but through the prism of a different distortion and taking account of the architectural changes between 1999 and 2009. As in the work at the Fondation Gianadda, ‘Hokusai's way’ resonates here with the blue-shaded horizons typical of Edo prints and the accordion-like articulation of Japanese screens.
