Lot 2137Rare and exceptional large Tumbuan-gable mask
Papua new Guinea, middle Sepik region, Sangriman at the confluence of the rivers Krosmeri and Blackwater. First half of the 20th century. Century group of the Abelam.

Rotang-frame, überflochten with reddish climbing fern (Lygodium) and painted with earth pigments. The flat, bowl-shaped mask shows a stylized face with a ridge for the nose, which is at the bottom by two laterally placed ridges to the mouth. The eyes are separately worked and applied. The side and bottom five ears are set-like arches. Unusually good state of preservation of the paint, which is rubbed on the flexible Material by nature, quite fast.

For the Abelam, the cultivation and processing of Yam is in a Central location. The various stages are celebrated with ceremonies and festivals. This includes Dance clothes and masks. Such large specimens are hung, however, on the gable of the up to 25 metres high, richly decorated cult - and the spirit houses, which were reserved as the main place of connection with the ancestors of men. Height 146cm, width 123cm, depth 53cm. Condition A/B.
