- Shepard Fairey
"The real message behind most of my works is 'question everything.'' - Shepard Fairey
One of the most famous and influential street artists of his generation, as well as being a successful graphical designer, Shephard Fairey’s creativity has resulted in his worldwide success over the past decades. Fairey’s Hope portrait created for Barack Obama’s 2008 election campaign, an iconic piece that catapulted his notoriety, epitomizes his work and highlights the power and influence of images in public spaces. Fairey uses his artwork to showcase his political and social concerns, using his art as a form of propaganda to stimulate public reflection, as he says in his own words: “The real message behind most of my work is question everything”.
With works present in major public institutions worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Fairey’s oeuvre is well represented across the globe. Important solo exhibitions, including at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston in 2009, followed by the exhibit at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, have cemented his place as a major figure in the contemporary art scene.
War is Over, a unique work on paper executed in 2007, explores Fairey’s promotion of peace and highlights his desire to spark a reaction in the viewer in order to create sense of relatability. A typical piece in his work, War is Over encompasses everything Fairey seeks to project in his art.
