LeWitts Reduktion der Formensprache
Der Künstler Sol LeWitt ist eine Schlüsselfigur der Minimal und Conceptual Art. Sein vielschichtiges Oeuvre umfasst Zeichnungen, Grafiken, großformatige Wandbilder und Skulpturen, die er seit den 1960er Jahren aus modular angelegten Strukturen entwickelte. Zentral für seine künstlerische Praxis ist dabei die Reduktion auf geometrische Grundformen sowie die systematische Untersuchung von Struktur und Farbe. Für LeWitt lag der eigentliche kreative Akt nicht in der Ausführung, sondern in der Konzeption der Arbeit. Den herkömmlichen Werkcharakter auf diese Weise radikal in Frage stellend, lieferte er essenzielle Impulse für die Entwicklung der Zeitgenössischen Kunst. LeWitts Werk bildet somit eine Grundlage für wichtige Positionen der Bayer Sammlung, insbesondere für Günther Förg und Georg Herold.

Leuchtende Farbigkeit trifft auf geometrische Formen
Die unbetitelte Gouache aus dem Jahr 1989 zeigt einen eindrucksvoll entworfenen sechsseitigen Körper vor einem leuchtend orangeroten Hintergrund. Die sichtbaren Flächen des Polygons sind in unterschiedlichen Farben angelegt: Die obere Fläche erscheint in einem hellen, gelbstichigen Grün, während ein intensiv blaues Rechteck die mittlere Zone dominiert und von zwei weiteren Rechtecken gerahmt wird. Die Seitenflächen zeigen ein dunkles Blaugrün auf der rechten und einen braun-violetten Ton auf der linken Seite. Charakteristisch für LeWitts Herangehensweise sind die leicht unregelmäßige Ausführung der geometrischen Elemente und die Transparenz der lasierend aufgetragenen Farbschichten. Dies verleiht der Komposition eine pulsierende Lebendigkeit.
Der mathematisch anmutende Körper mit seiner akzentuierten Farbigkeit ermöglicht unterschiedliche Interpretationen. Das Werk lässt sich nicht nur als Studie zur Wirkung farbiger Flächen oder als zweidimensionale Umsetzung eines Volumens, sondern auch als architektonisches Modell verstehen. In seiner dynamischen Intensität verweist die Gouache ebenfalls auf LeWitts bedeutsame Werkgruppe der "Wall Drawings", für die er internationale Anerkennung erfuhr.
